Polished Sauna Stones — Smooth Oval Löyly Stones Our polished sauna stones are machine-finished into uniform oval shapes, typically 5 to 8 centimetres in diameter, with a beautifully smooth surface. Unlike irregular volcanic stones that produce a fast, intense burst of steam, polished stones work differently — water rolls across the smooth surface and evaporates slowly and steadily, releasing gentle, continuous löyly.

This makes them particularly well-suited to therapeutic sauna sessions where a softer, more sustained heat is preferred over sharp blasts of steam.
The uniform size and shape of polished stones open up more creative stacking options than irregular stones allow:
– Pyramid style: Start with a circular base of larger stones and gradually reduce the size of each layer as you build upward, forming a tapered pyramid shape.
– Grid style: Stack stones crosswise in alternating layers, leaving a central chimney passage at least 10 centimetres wide to allow heat and steam to rise through the centre.
Whichever arrangement you choose, maintaining a vertical ventilation channel through the stack is essential. Without proper airflow, steam becomes trapped and stagnant, reducing the quality of your sauna experience and placing unnecessary strain on the heater.
The smooth, non-porous surface of polished stones produces significantly less mineral dust than irregular alternatives, keeping the air inside your sauna noticeably cleaner and fresher — a real advantage in enclosed sauna rooms.
Polished stones are also highly resistant to thermal stress and will typically last 8 years or more with proper care, roughly three times the lifespan of irregular volcanic stones. For saunas where longevity, clean air and visual presentation matter, polished stones are the premium choice.
The smooth surface of polished stones makes them well-suited for use with essential oil diffusion. However, never pour essential oils directly onto the stones — always use a dedicated aroma bowl or evaporator cup placed on top of the stone stack. This protects the stones and heating elements while allowing the scent to disperse evenly through the sauna.

Inspect stones every 6 months for any signs of cracking or surface damage. Restack and re-space them to maintain proper airflow channels.
Never pour ice-cold water directly onto hot polished stones. A sudden temperature difference exceeding 200°C can cause the stones to crack. Always use room-temperature or warm water.
Rinse stones with clean water during restacking to remove any surface residue or dust.
Check that your ventilation channel remains open after restacking. Stones can shift and settle over time, blocking airflow through the centre of the stack.
Replace stones if you notice visible cracks, chips or a decline in steam quality. With normal use, polished stones last 8 years or more.
Only use clean water on your stones. Oils, beer and other liquids leave residue that builds up over time and can damage heating elements. Use an aroma bowl or evaporator cup instead.
