Frequently Asked Questions
What type of rock are sauna stones made from?
Our sauna stones are natural volcanic basalt. This type of rock forms under extreme heat, giving it exceptional thermal resistance and a naturally porous surface ideal for steam production.
Why are the stones irregular in shape?
The irregular shape is intentional. Natural, unpolished stones have a larger surface area and more pores than smooth or rounded alternatives, which means better water absorption and stronger löyly steam.
How do I stack sauna stones correctly?
Place larger fist-sized stones on the bottom layer to support weight and allow airflow around the heating elements. Stack smaller egg-sized stones on top for increased surface area. Leave a gap of two to three fingers between layers so heat can circulate freely.
How often should I replace my sauna stones?
With regular home use, sauna stones typically last 3 to 5 years. For commercial saunas or heavy daily use, inspect them more frequently and expect to replace sooner. Signs of wear include crumbling, excessive cracking and noticeably reduced steam production.
Can I pour essential oils directly onto the stones?
No. Pouring oils or any liquid other than clean water directly onto sauna stones causes residue buildup that damages both the stones and the heating elements. Use a dedicated aroma bowl or evaporator cup placed on top of the stones instead.
Why is my steam production weaker than it used to be?
The most common cause is carbon and mineral buildup on the stones. Remove them, flip them over and restack with proper spacing. If the stones are visibly cracked or crumbling, it's time for a full replacement.
Can I use any type of rock as a sauna stone?
No. Never use crystalline rocks such as quartz, granite with large crystal structures, or river stones of unknown composition. These can fracture violently under rapid temperature changes and water contact, creating a serious safety risk. Always use stones specifically rated for sauna use.
How much water should I pour on the stones?
A small ladleful at a time is ideal. The goal is to let the water absorb into the pores and flash into steam — not to flood the stones and cool them down. Frequent, small pours produce better löyly than occasional large ones.

About this product

Overview

When water hits stones heated to glowing red, it seeps rapidly into those pores. The intense heat forces the water to expand and burst outward, producing a thick, powerful rush of steam. In Finland, this is called löyly, the soul of the sauna, and it’s what separates a good sauna session from a great one.

Stacking Your Stones

Irregular stones stack casually, but there are two rules worth following:

  • Bottom layer: Use fist-sized stones to support the weight above and allow airflow around the heating elements.
  • Top layer: Place smaller stones, roughly egg-sized, on top. The increased surface area means more contact with water and better steam production.

Leave a gap of two to three fingers between each layer to allow heat to circulate freely. Every six months, remove the stones and flip them over completely. This prevents dust and carbon from building up on the underside, which can reduce heat transfer over time.

Performance

Thanks to their porous structure, these stones can boost steam production by around 40% compared to smooth, non-porous alternatives. Because they absorb and release water quickly, you’ll find yourself adding water more frequently — which is exactly how a traditional Finnish sauna is meant to be used.

Made from natural volcanic basalt, the stones withstand extreme temperatures exceeding 600°C and will typically last 3 to 5 years with regular use before needing replacement.

Before First Use

Soak new stones in water and thoroughly scrub them before loading them into your heater. This removes any dust or debris from shipping and handling.

Important: Never use crystalline rocks such as quartz in your sauna heater. Crystalline stones can fracture violently when exposed to rapid temperature changes and water contact, creating a serious safety hazard.

Delivery

Every sauna is built to your order. Production runs 8 to 12 weeks from the date your order is confirmed, then delivery on top. Timber is a natural material and shipping is a global business, so weather and freight conditions can move that. We tell you if your build shifts rather than letting the date pass quietly.

Delivery is included anywhere in Thailand. International shipping is quoted separately.

YOUR SAUNA ARRIVES IN A CRATE, AND YOU UNLOAD IT

The sauna ships in a sealed timber crate to protect the panels in transit. It is heavy. Crate weight and dimensions are listed in the specifications, and you should read them before you order.

Getting the crate off the truck is your responsibility. The driver is not equipped to lift it. Arrange a forklift, a small crane, or enough people, and have them there on the agreed delivery day. This is the most common cause of a failed delivery, and a failed delivery carries a fee.

Check the access route before you order. The usual problem is a gate or side passage narrower than the crate. Send us a photo of the approach and we will tell you whether it works.

INSTALLATION

Installation is not included and is priced by region, because that is what it costs to get a crew and a vehicle to you:

Central Thailand, from 15,000 THB
Southern Isaan, from 20,000 THB
Northern, Eastern and Western Thailand, from 25,000 THB
Northern Isaan and Southern Thailand, from 35,000 THB
Islands excluding Phuket, from 40,000 THB

You do not have to take it. Many customers stand the cabin up themselves.

ELECTRICAL WORK

We will install your sauna. We do not do the electrical wiring.

You will receive the full electrical specification for your cabin and heater, so your qualified electrician knows the load, the voltage, the current, the cable size and the breaker before they arrive. We will assist your electrician on the day of installation.

In Bangkok and Chonburi we can arrange the electrical work for you. Everywhere else in Thailand you will need to appoint your own licensed electrician.

Installation

The wall sections are built and finished at the factory, then crated. On site you are joining finished panels, not building them. Two people with basic hand tools have it standing in one to two days.

No specialist tools, no cutting, no finishing work. The printed manual and our video guides take you through it, and we are on the end of a phone, a chat or a video call while you work. That is included, with no time limit.

The cabin needs a level, load-bearing base that drains. Concrete, paving or a properly built timber deck all work. It does not need to be a slab, but it does need to be flat.

Heater wiring is the exception. That must be done by a licensed electrician, for the reasons set out under Delivery & Installation.

Warranty

If an electrical item stops working within the warranty period, we’ll send you a replacement free of charge.

Structure and timber: 2 years
Walls, frame, benches, door and roof. If something fails we send a replacement part, or we come and repair it.

Electrical components: 1 year, by replacement
Heater, control panel, lighting and sensors. A failed unit is replaced rather than repaired, so you are not left without a sauna while something is sent away. The warranty covers the part. It does not cover rewiring or reinstallation.

Glass and hardware: 1 year
Tempered glass panels, hinges, handles and fixings.

Claims are handled in Thailand by our own team. There is no importer to go through and no overseas parts wait.

In practice we rarely use it. The cabins are heavily built and the electrical components are ones we have used for years and know well. Failures inside the warranty period are uncommon.

Looked after, a RonYen sauna and its equipment should give you 10 to 15 years of use, and often longer.

What is not covered: damage from misuse, modification, improper installation, lack of maintenance, or normal wear such as timber colour change with age. Timber darkens and moves. That is what timber does, and it is not a fault.

Care & Maintenance

Every 6 months, remove all stones from the heater, flip them over and restack. This prevents carbon and mineral deposits accumulating on the underside, which reduces heat transfer over time.
Inspect stones for cracks, crumbling or significant erosion each time you restack. Discard any stones that are breaking apart — fractured stones restrict airflow and reduce heater efficiency.
Rinse stones with clean water during restacking to wash away loose dust and debris.
Check that airflow gaps between stones are maintained after restacking. Stones naturally settle over time, so re-spacing them keeps heat circulating evenly.
Replace the full set of stones every 3 to 5 years depending on usage frequency. Commercial or heavy-use saunas may require replacement sooner.
Only use clean water on your stones. Avoid pouring essential oils, beer or other liquids directly onto sauna stones — these leave residue that accelerates carbon buildup and can damage the heating elements. Use an aroma bowl or evaporator cup instead.

Returns & Refunds

Stock items can be returned within 7 days of delivery in resalable condition. Custom and made to order items cannot be returned once production has begun. Faulty goods are repaired, replaced or refunded at our cost.

Common questions

Everything you want to know about saunas & heaters

Outdoor and indoor cabins, barrels, cylinders, cube and modern designs, plus sauna-and-shower combos — from a compact one-person unit up to fourteen-person commercial rooms. Every model is made to order and customisable to your space. Browse saunas.

Red Cedar and Finnish Thermo Pine both handle heat and humidity beautifully — cedar for its aroma and natural rot resistance, thermo pine for its stability in wet conditions. Japanese Hinoki is our premium pick. Canadian Hemlock is excellent value for indoor cabins. We’ll match the timber to your budget, look and location.

Outdoor saunas are fully weather-sealed for gardens, rooftops and pool decks. Indoor models are built for bathrooms, gyms and spare rooms. Both use the same indoor-rated electric stone heaters — the difference is the exterior cladding and weatherproofing.

It depends on the internal volume of the cabin. As a guide: 4.5kW for 3–6 m³, 6kW for 5–8 m³, 9kW for 8–11 m³, 12kW for 11–15 m³, 15kW for 13–18 m³ and 18kW for 15–20 m³. Above 20 m³ takes two heaters. Up to and including 9kW runs on single phase; above that is three phase only, which in practice means anything from a six-person cabin upwards. We confirm the exact requirement in your quote so your electrician knows precisely what to install.

Both are food-grade and corrosion-resistant. 316 adds extra protection for coastal air and chlorinated water, so it’s the safer choice near the sea or beside a pool. 304 is excellent value everywhere else. We’ll recommend the right grade for your site. See ice baths.

Ice works to get started, but it melts fast in Thailand and gets expensive. A chiller holds a precise temperature day after day with no effort — it’s the easiest way to make cold therapy a daily habit rather than an occasional event.

Our chillers run from 0°C to 42°C, so the same unit chills in the hot season and heats in the cool one. Most people plunge between 3°C and 10°C. Beginners usually start around 12–15°C and work down over a few weeks.

Our chillers include filtration and ozone sanitation that keep the water fresh for weeks between changes. We walk you through simple water care at handover — it’s far less work than a pool.
